PLEASE NOTE :It is recommended that potential students for intermediate courses have attended at least part 1 (the "taught" element) of the “ATACP Foundation Programme in Aquatic Physiotherapy” as more specific intermediate courses assume that the participants are already familiar with the content of the foundation course and will build on it.

Information about the Intermediate course - Aquatic Physiotherapy in Paediatrics

PLEASE NOTE : this is a two day course with a certificate of attendance issued on completion for your continuing professional development folder but it is not a formal qualification.

Aim: To provide the theoretical knowledge & clinical skills to design, implement and evaluate safe and effective Aquatic Physiotherapy for Paediatric patients

Objectives
Day 1 am

  • To revise the hydrostatic & hydrodynamic principles covered at Foundation level and apply to Paediatric patients
  • To revise the physiology of immersion covered at Foundation level and apply the screening process to the Paediatric patients.to use clinical reasoning and risk assessment.
  • To revise the basic principles practically & how they may apply to the Paediatric patient.

Day 1 pm

  • To understand movement principles & apply them to the Paediatric patient both in and out of the water.
  • To improve handling of the Paediatric patient in the water to maximise function & avoid associated reactions.

Day 2 am

  • To understand the theory of Applied Halliwick and Functional Approach for Paediatric patients
  • To use Applied Halliwick and Functional Approach for Paediatric patients

It should be noted that whilst Jacqueline has been awarded a Halliwick Association of Swimming Therapy (Halliwick AST) Halliwick Instructors certificate (HIC) she does not hold a qualification as a teacher - students attending this course will not gain a qualification in Applied Halliwick and Functional Approach for Paediatric patients - she will be introducing and discussing Applied Halliwick and Functional Approach for Paediatric patients with the recommendation that students on this course go on to study on a Halliwick AST course in order to gain practical skills and understanding of the Halliwick concept

Day 2 pm

  • To demonstrate the use of Aquatic Physiotherapy in Paediatric patients including outcome measures.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Demonstrate clinical reasoning & understanding of the physiological effects of immersion regarding the selection of Paediatric patients for Aquatic Physiotherapy.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of hydrostatics & hydrodynamic principles by developing & progressing techniques with the Paediatric patient in the pool using problem solving techniques & evaluation.
  • Demonstrate safe moving & handling of the Paediatric patient in the pool environment both in and out of the pool
